The Certification Game: Learn the certification process for marine energy conversion systems by playing!

The Certification Game has received a fresh make-over and is now ready to be played at workshops, events, and training sessions. Originally conceived by Bluespring, the game is designed to make the often complex IECRE certification process for marine energy conversion systems both accessible and interactive.

What is the goal?

The game challenges participants to work together as a team to rebuild the certification process under IECRE. By the end of the session, each group will have:

  • Placed the certification steps in the correct order, from Technology Qualification (TQ) to Type Testing.

  • Matched the appropriate IEC Technical Specifications to each step.

  • Identified the correct end product (Conformity Statement or Test Report) for every stage.

How does it work?

The game is played with a set of printable cards on a table:

  1. Order the steps – arrange the Certification Step cards vertically in sequence.

  2. Assign specifications – match the IEC Technical Specification cards to the relevant steps.

  3. Match the outcomes – decide whether the result is a Conformity Statement, Test Report, or both.

  4. Review & discuss – explain your reasoning as a group.

  5. Facilitator feedback – compare your results with the official process and learn where adjustments are needed.

Why play?

Certification is a critical part of bringing innovative offshore renewable technologies to market, but the process can be difficult to navigate. The Certification Game breaks it down into clear, practical steps—helping participants understand not only what comes first, but also why each step matters.

A joint effort

This interactive tool was originally developed by Bluespring, and with the support of Campus@Sea updated with a fresh look.  This version is made possible through the Offshore Proof project. The project is co-financed by Interreg North-West Europe, the Province of South Holland, and the Province of West Flanders.
